Resume Software
Here is a list of software that can be used to produce a resume. Links are provided to downloads and/or further info where appropriate.
Word Processors:
- MS Word/Office -> Commercial
The worlds defacto standard word processor, which leads to its greatest strength: compatibility, because nearly every business will have a copy. If the cost doesn't bother you get a copy because it will often save you having to use work arounds just to make sure your resume is readable by an employer.
- OpenOffice Writer -> Click here for FREE download of OpenOffice
Probably the best free word processor out there. It can handle MS word ".doc" formatted documents fairly well, but not always perfectly so you should use its PDF exporting ability if sending an electronic copy of your resume to ensure employers get to see your resume with perfect formatting. If you plan to mainly send paper/hard copies of your resume then it will be fine.
Read the file formats section of our resume guide if planning to use this or other word processors other than the defacto industry standard "MS Word".
PDF outputting software
PDF files can be read on nearly every computer around (due to Adobe Reader being freely available), and allows very detailed formatting. This makes it an excellent choice of format for sending resumes in if you dont have MS Word to produce ".doc" files for you. It may even be better than ".doc" because you never know when an employer might be using a machine without MS Word/Office on it.
Resume Generators
This type of software takes your input and spits out a formatted resume. We haven't yet found one we can recommend though.
